The Berndsen Lab in Stephens Hall
Our wet lab is in Stephens Hall, part of the Department of Biochemistry complex at the northeast corner of the Mizzou campus. It is set up for producing and characterizing our own samples:
BSL-1 and BSL-2 cell culture for bacterial and mammalian cells
Full protein purification capabilities
Ultracentrifuges and other equipment for sample preparation
The Electron Microscopy Core in The NextGen Precision Health Building
Our cryo-EM work is done at the University of Missouri Electron Microscopy Core (EMC) in the Roy Blunt NextGen Precision Health building. Along with the Titan Krios G4 (below), we use:
JEOL JEM-1400 transmission electron microscope (40–120 kV) for negative-stain screening
Thermo Scientific Aquilos 2 cryo-FIB/SEM for milling thin lamellae from frozen cells for cryo-electron tomography
Leica Thunder cryo-light microscope for correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) with the Aquilos 2
Vitrobot Mark IV for preparing cryo-EM grids
More about the core: MU Electron Microscopy Core
Titan Krios G4. The core’s Thermo Scientific Titan Krios G4 is a 300 kV cryo-TEM built for stability and high-throughput structure determination at better than 2 Å resolution. It loads up to 12 grids for automated data collection and supports single-particle analysis, cryo-electron tomography and microED.
